Work History

2000-Present

Principal and Chief Technical Officer of Technocrats, Inc. (established in 1983).  A technical consulting firm with extensive world wide expertise in the areas of fossil fuel combustion, including coal, black liquor, and biomass; control of air emissions; the management of solid fuels, ash/slagging alleviation and removal- all related to the generation of steam for power, industry, and pulp/paper. Consultations include the re-powering, upgrade of plants, training, maintenance, and providing of expert testimony.

1995-2000

President and Chief Executive Officer, Magaldi Corporation (Charlotte, NC). Designed, fabricated, and installed novel high temperature (+1900F) bulk material handling systems in North America, as well as traditional conveyor system projects to the cement, lead, lime, foundries, and coal fired utility markets.

1991-1995

Vice President, Operating Plant Services, Kvaerner Pulping (Charlotte, NC) now a subsidiary of Metso Power. Responsibilities included upgrades, retrofits, field service, training, maintenance and replacement parts for not only Kvaerner equipment but for clients owning competitors' equipment.

1964 – 1991

Babcock and Wilcox Company, Barberton, Ohio  (B&W)

Summary

Initially in Field Engineering with responsibilities for commissioning new power plants, training operators, demonstrating guaranteed  performance, establishing maintenance programs and implementing field corrections as required to meet guaranteed performance.

Followed by assignments in design engineering with responsibilities for Combustion Systems, Pulverizers, Air Heaters, Ash Removal Systems as technical manager.

Later, as Product Line Manager for Fossil Fuel Systems with technical and financial responsibilities for the above-mentioned engineered products/systems.

General Manager of Industrial Projects-a service business dedicated to the conceptualization/application of upgrades and retrofits to enhance production and reduce emissions. 

Finally. General Manager, Base Business, Diamond Power Specialty Company (Lancaster, Ohio), a subsidiary of B&W.

Manage the production and editing of technical papers, magazine articles and promotional literature. Revise technical papers for grammar, mechanics, and style, to conform to standards set by technical publishers of journals and Proceedings.

Assist non-English-proficient engineers in writing to conform to U.S. style.

1982-1991

Technical Editor, Market Communications Department.

  • Responsible for the editing of technical papers, promotional literature, news releases and company newsletters.
  • Oversaw all production procedures leading to publication of technical papers, including writing, graphic design, approvals, printing and final distribution.
  • Edited over 300 technical papers for publication in national engineering journals and PROCEEDINGS of EPA, DOE, ASME, TAPPI, EPRI and Power GEN, adhering to strict style requirements.
  • Interacted with editors of Proceedings, journals and trade magazines:
    Mechanical Engineering, POWER, Power Engineering, TAPPI Journal.
  • Created formats for company technical publications.
